Tired but Wired? When Your Mind and Body Won't Switch Off
You've been tired all day. Your eyes ache, your body feels heavy, and you've been looking forward to bed since lunch. Then you lie down, and your mind starts racing.
If this happens most nights, you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. People call it being "tired but wired", and it's one of the most common reasons people come to see us.
In short, being tired but wired happens when your body is exhausted but your stress response is still switched on. It can usually be helped with small changes in the evening and, when it has gone on for weeks, with support from a therapist who can help you understand and settle what is keeping you on alert.

Why Your Body and Mind Won't Settle
Stress is designed to keep us alert to problems. During a demanding day, that's useful. But if the day never really ends (messages in the evening, worries carried to bed), the stress response doesn't get the signal to stand down. Your body is ready for rest. Your mind is still on duty.
Common signs include:
feeling exhausted but restless at night;
a mind that replays the day or rehearses tomorrow;
tight shoulders, a clenched jaw or headaches;
waking in the early hours and struggling to get back to sleep;
feeling irritable or on edge during the day.
Three Things to Try This Week
1. Keep a steady wake-up time, even after a poor night. It helps your body clock settle more than an early bedtime does.
2. Set a caffeine cut-off. Kopi, teh and energy drinks after early afternoon can still be working at bedtime.
3. Create a wind-down hour. Dim the lights, put work away, and do something calm and screen-free before bed.
When to See a Doctor First
See your GP if you snore loudly, wake up gasping, or fall asleep during the day without meaning to, or if your sleep problems started after a new medication. These can have medical causes that need checking.

How Therapy Can Help
If you've been tired but wired for weeks, it often helps to talk to someone. At the LSCCH Therapy Centre, your first session is a conversation: we listen to what's been happening, how it's affecting your life, and what you'd like to change.
From there, your therapist will suggest an approach that suits you. This might include:
Clinical hypnotherapy, to help your body and mind learn to relax, including self-hypnosis you can use at home;
Integrative psychotherapy, to understand and work through the stresses keeping you on alert;
Practical strategies for sleep and stress that fit your daily life. Sessions are available in person in Petaling Jaya or online, so you can talk to someone from home. Sessions start from RM180.
